Field note 01 · River edge
Elephant
Loxodonta africana
River corridors & open woodland
At the waterline, a matriarch pauses long enough for the herd to gather around her. Her feet read the ground before the river is crossed; her trunk tests the air for rain, predators, and the memory of another herd.
In the Mara, elephants turn a landscape into a living archive. They open paths through brush, carry seeds across distance, and return to water routes that have outlasted a human lifetime.
